About Palmer City
Palmer is a quaint little farming community with a small town feel located about 30 minutes North of Anchorage. It is one of the first towns developed in the state and is known as the Pioneer Community to many. It is best known for its farming and the huge produce grown there. The wonderful out door recreation along with the hunting, fishing and many lakes and rivers near by.
The town is connected to Anchorage, Wasilla and beyond by a well lite 6 lane highway for the most part, making the commute much safer then in days gone by. You will want to be on the watch for wild life along the highway, especially the moose as they do just run right out into the road for no apparent reason.
You will see the most beautiful mountains that surround the entire Matanuska-Susitna Valley, more commonly referred to as the Mat-Su Valley. And on a clear cold night if your lucky keep a look out you can catch the Northern Lights as they dance above you, one of the seven wonders of the world.
Palmer is the home of the Alaska State Fair which is a huge event. People come from every where to see the enormous vegetables, berry's, and plants that are grown from the rich soils and long summer nights.
4-H is very popular to the locals and there is always a lot of kids involved with the fair showing off their prized rabbits, cows, cabbage and so on.
Palmer is also the home of the Reindeer Farm, the Musk Ox Farm and West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. There is also a speed way to motor mortor cycle and auto races in the summer..
Large farm lands have been subdivided over the past 10 years into residential developments. A big draw to this area is the availability of larger affordable land that can not be found in the Anchorage/Eagle River area. Because land in this area is less home prices reflect that as well. You can find newer homes on 1/2 acres and more in the $200,000 price range and up. Rentals are more affordable too. The other side of the prices being lower is the fact that the majority of the people still do commute to Anchorage and with the rising gas prices there is not much savings compared to living in Anchorage anymore.
It is the life style that keeps this area growing. The feel of the open space and room to breath, not being cramped in like city life can feel. The Mat-Su Valley is one of the few areas that still allow snow machines and 4 wheelers in many residential neighborhoods.
Over the past 10 years or so there has been huge leaps in development of the Palmer area. Many more business and services have popped up everywhere making more jobs for the locals and keeping them from commuting to the Anchorage area. There are 3 major grocery stores, hardware stores, Dr's, Dentists and most amenities can now be found locally.
The schools are modern, well funded and offer a wide variety of programs to meet individual needs.School busses pick up and drop off kids who are not with in walking distance. There is music, art, sports, foreign languages, computer classes and more offered through the local schools. Sports programs are very dear to both parents and students with the long winters here. The schools have foot ball, soccer, hockey, skiing, running, swimming and so on.
One thing I always notice is that most of both Palmer and Wasilla areas are very windy. I am not sure if they get less snow or the wind blows it away but they seem to have break up a bit earlier in the Spring. I have noticed over the years that it is generally warmer in the Valley, both in the winter and the summer. They are located more in land then Anchorage area is.
